Bring a report of birth and birth certificate.
Where to file: the family registry division of the local government.
If the child is born overseas, the birth may be reported to the Korean embassy or consulate or the parents may report it at the family registry of the local government upon return to Korea. Person who needs to report the birth of the child: father or mother The birth must be reported within one month of birth.

Child born to a Korean father and foreign mother
  • If the child is born in a marriage, the father can report the birth and add the child on his family register. Bring a report of birth and birth certificate.
  • If the child is born out of wedlock, Korean translation of their non-Korean mother’s single status certificate, her certificate of nationality, and birth certificates for the child/children shall be presented. (It is a must that there be no record about your marriage before their birth.) The children are registered as the children of the Korean father in his family register, but an application for their Korean citizenship shall be submitted separately to the Ministry of Justice.
Child born to a Korean mother and foreign father
  • If the child is born within marriage
    • - The mother may report the birth on her family side.
      Required documents: Report of birth and birth certificat
    • - If the father has already reported the birth, then the birth certificate of the foreign country may be used as evidence.

  • If the child is born outside of marriage
    • - The mother may add the child on her family register. However, if the report is made by their mother, the father is not recorded in the children’s family register.
      Required documents: Report of birth and birth certificate one of each
      ※ The birth certificate may be one from a foreign country or may be substituted by a family register that indicates the birth.
