- Nam-gu Newly Designates 27 CU Convenience Stores as Cooling Shelters Ahead of the Heatwave -
- Strengthening Accessibility with Round-the-Clock, Community-Based Shelters -

Ulsan Nam-gu (Mayor Lim Hyun-cheol) announced on the 27th that, in cooperation with BGF Retail, it will newly designate and operate 27 CU convenience stores in the district as cooling shelters to protect residents’ health from summer heatwaves and tropical nights.

The new designation of convenience store cooling shelters was carried out as part of a tailored heatwave response measure, in line with the Korea Meteorological Administration’s introduction this year of a new “Nighttime Heat Advisory” aimed at preventing damage from high nighttime temperatures.

Cooling shelters centered on government offices, banks, or senior centers can be used during weekday daytime hours, but they have the limitation of being insufficient to respond to tropical nights and heatwaves occurring in the evening or on weekends and holidays.

Accordingly, Nam-gu has designated the 27 highly accessible CU convenience stores, together with the existing 20 smart bus shelters, as “community-based night shelters” where residents can drop in anytime―regardless of weekday or weekend―to cool off during the evening and nighttime hours.

Meanwhile, in addition to the roughly 270 shelters already in operation, the newly designated cooling shelters will operate through September, the end of the heatwave response period.

Residents can easily check the locations of nearby cooling shelters through major search portals such as Naver and Daum, the
Safe Korea website, and the mobile app “Emergency Ready App.”

A Nam-gu official said, “With the introduction of the Nighttime Heat Advisory this year, concerns over nighttime heatwave damage have grown,” adding, “Through convenience store cooling shelters open 24 hours a day, we will do our utmost to strengthen the heatwave safety net so that residents can spend a safe and cool summer at any hour, day or night.”
