“I can see well even without a magnifying glass”
Nam-gu Publishes Ulsan’s First Large-Print District Administration Newsletter “Gongeoptap” - “Barrier-free” district administration promotion without blind spots for the information-vulnerable, including the elderly - Ulsan Nam-gu (Mayor Dong-wook Seo) is strengthening customized district administration promotion with no blind spots by publishing a large-print district promotion newsletter booklet “Gongeoptap” for the information-vulnerable, such as the elderly and those with low vision, for the first time in Ulsan. Nam-gu has started publishing the booklet-type Gongeoptap (45 pages), which had been published quarterly, by dividing it into two types starting this year: a standard 16-cut size newsletter (2,000 copies) and a large 8-cut size large-print newsletter (500 copies). The large-print newsletter is characterized by improved readability by doubling the size of the text and pages compared to the previous version, and it was designed to increase practical information accessibility for the information-vulnerable, such as the elderly and those with low vision. A “View More Photos” feature was also added, allowing readers to see more related photos, such as landscapes featured on the pages, by utilizing a QR code function. The large-print newsletter is distributed to 4 senior welfare centers and 134 senior citizen centers within Nam-gu so that the elderly can access Nam-gu news more comfortably, and it is receiving favorable reviews from the elderly who have encountered the booklet. Yu In-a, President of the Samsan 2nd Senior Citizen Center, expressed her thoughts, saying, “It was uncomfortable even with a magnifying glass because the letters were hard to see on a mobile phone or in a booklet, but the newly released newsletter is large and the letters are easy to read, so it is really great to be able to access various information about Nam-gu that I was normally curious about.” Previously, Nam-gu was the first among the five districts and counties in the region to produce a monthly Braille district newsletter “Gongeoptap” starting in July 2022 to expand the right to know and information equality for the visually impaired, and it also provides a “Reading Gongeoptap Service” on the mobile Gongeoptap, which is sent via text message to about 74,000 people. Nam-gu plans to continue strengthening district administration promotion by discovering various promotion systems so that the information-vulnerable, such as the elderly and the disabled, are not marginalized. A Nam-gu official emphasized, “We came to publish the large-print district newsletter booklet “Gongeoptap” for the first time in Ulsan for district promotion that residents practically feel and need,” adding, “We will continue to strengthen the concept of “barrier-free” in district promotion to strive so that there are no information-vulnerable groups.” |
