The “Safe Unmanned Parcel Locker” operated by Ulsan Nam-gu (Mayor Dong-wook Seo) is receiving a great response, establishing itself as an effective life-friendly administrative service that enhances residents‘ living convenience.

The Nam-gu Safe Unmanned Parcel Locker is one of the policies for creating a safe and convenient urban environment and has been in operation since 2019.

Currently, there are a total of 6 Safe Unmanned Parcel Lockers installed and operating in Nam-gu public facilities such as Nam-gu Office Council Chamber, Dal-dong Administrative Welfare Center, Sinjeong 3-dong Administrative Welfare Center, Samho-dong Public Parking Lot, (Former) Social Economy Support Center, Yaeum Jangsaengpo-dong Happy Together Town. Last year, the number of uses reached 8,416.

1,400 uses per locker on average, indicating that the Safe Unmanned Parcel Lockers are being consistently utilized in residents' daily lives. In particular, they are installed mainly in studio apartment cluster areas and collective housing areas, contributing to resolving inconveniences for residents who have difficulty receiving parcels during the day.

Furthermore, it is evaluated as playing a role in preventing violent crimes disguised as parcel delivery, reducing safety issues associated with nighttime delivery, and alleviating the repetitive visits and excessive labor burden on couriers by reducing re-deliveries due to recipient absence.

It is analyzed that the use of Safe Unmanned Parcel Lockers is increasing significantly among residents who are reluctant to expose their addresses or personal information, coinciding with the recent trend of preferring non-face-to-face transactions in the active second-hand market.

The Safe Unmanned Parcel Locker operates by inputting the recipient's mobile phone number when depositing an item, which triggers an authentication number to be sent. The recipient can safely retrieve the item at any time, 24 hours a day.

It is available for free to anyone year-round, but the storage period is 48 hours. If this period is exceeded, a late fee of KRW 500 per day is charged.

A Nam-gu official stated, “With the increase in single-person households and the spread of non-face-to-face transactions, the demand for Safe Unmanned Parcel Lockers is continuously increasing,” adding, “We plan to analyze usage trends in detail and review whether to expand installations in the future.”
